Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She’s spent years trying to teach David the rules from “a peach is not a funny-looking apple” to “keep your pants on in public”-in order to head off David’s embarrassing behaviors. But the summer Catherine meeting Jason, a surprising, new sort-of-friend, and Kristi, the potential next-door friend she’s always wished for; it’s her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal?

Print the attachment from the website and complete all pages.

Also, make a list of about 10 "rules" of your own. Rules you live by and think other people should know! Be creative!


2. Imagine that the only way you were able to communicate is like Jason. Draw some picture cards of words that you would want to have in your communication book. Make sure you include some that involve emotions, like "extraordinary" or "ecstatic".


3. Book Mosaic

  • Follow the Book Mosaic outline to complete the project. You may use poster board or create it using a program like Microsoft Word on the computer.
